PASTOR'S CORNER
![]() Sometime ago someone came up with the idea of designating September 11 as Grandparents Day. Perhaps it is because I am a Grandparent, but personally I think it is a wonderful idea. I no longer have any Grandparents, but recently became a Great Grandparent, and I LOVE it. I have many fond memories of my Grandparents as I am sure others do. What a wonderful legacy they have given us! Following is a copy of a letter perhaps each Grandparent could copy in their own words for their own Grandchildren. Dear great-grandson Ryan, I wish I were close enough to give you a big hug and an embrace, but such is not possible, so this letter will have to do. What I have to say may seem to apply to a 20 year old but instead it is for you a 13 year old. I think your intelligence will grasp the principles. There are two ideas that if you will embrace and incorporate into your life will make it more profitable and enjoyable. These two principles are “discipline” and “work”. It would be well if you could impose them on your self, rather than have others impose them on you, or be left without them. In this age of electronics and computer science, wizards are going to be a dime a dozen, but there are not many true craftsman. If you can become a genuine craftsman of any essential trade, you will have the freest life possible. You will be able to go anywhere and gain employment, and again, go elsewhere if you desire. This is illustrated by the personal experience of much travel and many years. In a small town in Oklahoma I had to have my truck repaired. The man who repaired it had only a high school education, but had made himself knowledgeable of all aspects of automobile repair. He had a wall of books about 8 by 12 feet completely filled with books on the repair of the mechanical equipment of all autos. He was truly a craftsman. But every young man should go to college, if given the opportunity, to enlarge his mind. What I’ve had to say here-to-fore pertains to material aspects of your life. However, there is a more essential consideration. Elbert Einstein, who I regard as the greatest scientist of the 20th century, said in his later years that there had to be a higher intelligence to account for all the order and systems of a complex world. Don’t believe the silliness of evolution that you are being taught in the public schools, but rather incorporate the following instruction into your life. “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” This principle can be applied to your life, both materially and spiritually. Your great-grandfather, Orval Harden ![]()
